Steel mill

Battle of San Juan Hill
💧Battle of San Juan Hill (July 1, 1898)也称为the battle for the San Juan Heights,是美西战争中的一场战役(the Spanish–American War),San Juan heights位于古巴(Cuba).

Al Smith(December 30, 1873 – October 4, 1944)
💧美国政治家,曾经是共和党的总统候选人(the Democratic U.S. presidential candidate in 1928),Smith可能八字和Roosevelt不和,在Franklin D. Roosevelt竞争当中,由于大部分选民对罗斯福新政(Roosevelt's New Deal)怀有极大的希望,最终Al Smith还是败下阵来。

Crush Your Problems
- "The way to get things done," say Schwab, "is to stimulate competition. I do not mean in a sordid,money-getting way, but in the desire to excel."
💧The way to get things done is to stimulate competition.
the way to... is to...
e.g.The way to finish your task on time is to plan everything in advance.
The way to solve the environmental problem is to take action from ourselves immediately.
I do not mean in..., but in...
e.g.The way to accompolish a goal is not in the repeating hard work of one single person, but in the cooperation of a team.
- A challenge not only changed his life; it had a real effect upon the future of his nation.
💧not only,你在用到的时候是不是一定要加一个but also?
其实你不用这样,not only后面可以有多种方式,另一个可以用的是not only...,but ... as well.
e.g.Team work benifits not only the employers, but the working staff as well, for they could be much more efficient this way.
Patriotism represents not only the love of one's country; it serves as an identity of his/her own nationality.
- His "humanizing" of criminals wrought miracles in the way of prison reform.
Content Analysis
(Shortly this mill, which had been lagging way behind in production, was turning out more work than any other mill in the plant.)PS:这里plant指的是industry哈。
"The way to get things done," say Schwab, "is to stimulate competition. I do not mean in a sordid, money-getting way, but in the desire to excel."
(Turning suddenly on Theodore Roosevelt, he cried in a ringing voice: "Is the hero of San Juan Hill a coward?")
("All men have fears, but the brave put down their fears and go forward, sometimes to death, but always to victory")
Lewis E. Lawes of New Hampton,但是这位小哥哥也听到过各种流言,有点怂,Al Smith直接放大招(throw down a challenge)说:你害怕我不怪你,这件事情还是需要个大人物来搞定的。
("I don't blame you for being scared. It's a tough spot. It'll take a big person to go up there and stay.")
(His "humanizing" of criminals wrought miracles in the way of prison reform.)
(If the work was exciting and interesting, the worker looked forward to doing it and was motivated to do a good job.)
The desire to excel. The desire for a feeling of importance.
这就是今天卡叔的Principle 12啦~ Throw down a challenge.
Today's Bonus
That is what makes foot-races and hog-calling and pie-eating contests.
💧Pie-eating contest
The annual World Pie Eating Championship(年度世界吃派锦标赛),通常是在英格兰举行,1992年首次举办。
💧The Wife-Carrying World Championships
几种比赛姿势都是需要练习的:背着(piggyback), 扛肩膀上fireman's carry (over the shoulder), 或者...倒挂着—Estonian-style (the wife hangs upside-down with her legs around the husband's shoulders, holding onto his waist)...
💧World Sauna Championships
The World Sauna Championships也是伟大的Finland搞出来的,从1999年开始的年度锦标赛,组织者要求参赛选手在桑拿间里面静坐比赛,看谁可以坚持的更久,Sauna Championships第一次举办就吸引了超过20个国家的参赛选手。
💧Chess Boxing
💧Pillow Fight League
💧The World Black Pudding Throwing Championships
来自神奇的英国Lancashire,据说历史悠久,可以追溯到到玫瑰战争的时候(the War of the Roses)... 据说代表the House of Lancaster 和the House of York的两方势力,在1455年的一场战斗中,打完了所有的弹药,想来想去不能不打...所以就开始互相丢食物(at a battle in Stubbins, Lancashire in 1455, they are said to have run out of ammunition and resorted to throwing food at each other)兰卡斯特家的扔black pudding from Lancashire,约克家的扔Yorkshire puddings from Yorkshire.
smart word
"All men have fears, but the brave put down their fears and go forward, sometimes to death, but always to victory"
