Background Information
Owen D. Young
美国实业家，商人，律师。在1929年在德国的第二次赔偿会议中（Second Reparations Conference）作为外交代表，制定了杨格计划（Young Plan）。
杨格计划是第一次世界大战后战胜国为代替道威斯计划而实施的德国支付赔款计划。并且，欧文·扬还创立了美国无线电公司（RCA Corporation）。1986年被通用公司收购。
Shell Oil Company
荷兰皇家壳牌设在美国的跨国石油公司，世界最大的石油公司之一。壳牌石油公司，包括它的联合公司和它控股的股份公司是美国最大的石油和天然气生产商、天然气销售商、汽油销售商和石油化工生产商。
Virgil (or Vergil) 维吉尔
奥古斯都时代的古罗马诗人。其作品有《牧歌集》（Eclogues）、《农事诗》（Georgics）、史诗《埃涅阿斯纪》（Aeneid）三部杰作。
维吉尔被奉为罗马的国民诗人、被当代及后世广泛认为是古罗马最伟大的诗人之一，也因在《牧歌集》中预言耶稣诞生被基督教奉为圣人。其《埃涅阿斯纪》影响了包括贺拉斯、但丁和莎士比亚等许多当代与后世的诗人与作家。
《埃涅阿斯纪》在中世纪被当作占卜的圣书，由此衍生出“维吉尔卦”。在但丁的《神曲》中，维吉尔也曾作为但丁的保护者和老师出现。

- The world is full of people who are grabbing and self-seeking.
这个世界充满了贪婪和自私自利的人。
💧grab这个词想必大家都知道，是“夺取”的意思，seek是寻找，那么self－seeking就是自己给自己找，也就是自私自利。 - People / who can put themselves in the place of other people, who can understand the workings of their minds, need never worry about what the future has in store for them.
为对于那些能够设身处地为他人着想、洞悉他人心理的人，根本不必担心他们的未来（未来已经准备好了给他们的奖赏）。
💧put oneself in the place of others,意思就是站在他人的立场上
💧in store的意思是储存，准备。
- Looking at the other person's point of view / and arousing in him an eager want for something / is not to be construed as manipulating that person / so that he will do something that is only for your benefit and his detriment. Each party should gain from the negotiation.
了解对方的需求，从而激发对方的兴趣，并不等同于操纵他人、损人利己。沟通的宗旨是双赢。
💧这里的looking at the other person’s point of view 的意思和上一句话中put oneself in the place of others是一个意思。 💧be construed as 这个短语在单词精讲部分已经有过解释，意思就是理解为…, 看作…, so that 显然引导的是一个结果状语从句。party这里也不是聚会的意思，而是党派。
- Two or three of us got to throwing the ball around the other night - and I got a black eye.
💧black eye 可不是黑色眼睛的意思哦~而是乌青眼，就是被揍啦！
e.g.
John got a black eye from a fight.约翰因为打架落了个乌眼青。
💧dark eye 才是黑眼睛
原文意思是：前几天晚上我们两三个人在街上打球，结果我被人给打了。
Content Analysis
今天卡叔又讲了几个有趣的故事，来说明成功人士懂得站在对方的角度思考问题，以此来解决需求。
💧故事一是关于两位保险推销员：一家大型保险公司的两位销售员卡尔和约翰，在推销新产品的时候是截然不同的态度。
"Carl could have had those sales, but he made no effort to arouse in us any desire for the policies."
“卡尔原本能够抢占先机，促成这笔生意的，但是他并没有花心思引起我们的兴趣。”
So the rare individual who unselfishly tries to serve others has an enormous advantage. He has little competition.
这世界从不缺少贪婪成性、自私自利之人。能够站在他人角度考虑、真诚地帮助他人的人却少之又少。因此后者必将卓然于众，无可匹敌。

💧故事二是关于壳牌石油的一位区域经理，如何激发他人的意愿后，成功实现了双赢。
All his talking and discussion hadn't helped, but by arousing an eager want in the manager, by showing him the modern station, he had accomplished his goal, and both the manager and Mike benefited.
惠登用一个美好图景来激励经理，最后也达到了自己满意。
To repeat Professor Overstreet's wise advice: First, arouse in the other person an eager want. He who can do this has the whole world with him. He who cannot walks a lonely way.

💧Exaggeration 夸张
用夸大的手法去描述了某件事情，使得它看起来更好或者更坏
e.g.I’m as hungry as a starving lion.
我饿的像一头饿的狮子。（表示我非常非常的饿。）
💧Literary allusion文学用典
文学用典指的是用我们所熟知的文学中的人物形象来表达我们的意思。
比如说：我被丘比特的箭射中了。丘比特是爱神维纳斯的儿子，被他的箭射中就表示某人恋爱了。
再比如：Achilles，是一位常胜将军，刀枪不入，除了他的脚踝。最后，在特洛伊战争中，是被敌人射中脚踝而死。因此，当人们说到Achilles' Heel 就表示一个人的弱点。
e.g.My math is my Achilles' Heel.
我的数学是我的阿喀琉斯之踵。表示数学是我的弱点。
