Background Information

Hall Caine

霍尔·凯恩，英国小说家、戏剧作家，著有15部小说，话题覆盖面很广，抨击各类社会问题，包括divorce（离婚）, domestic violence（暴力）, illegitimacy（违法）, religious bigotry（宗教偏执） and women's rights（女权）。

Hall的作品在他的年代红极一时，很多被拍成电影（大部分是黑白默片silent black and white films），其中The Prodigal Son成为英国最长的商业片，1929年的The Manxman是希区柯克（Hitchcock）的最后一部默片（1929年sounded film的技术得到了发展，默片开始退出主流圈子）。

Dante Gabriel Rossetti

但丁·加百利·罗塞蒂出生于英国维多利亚时期意大利裔的罗塞蒂家族。是19世纪英国拉斐尔前派重要代表画家。但丁·加百利·罗塞蒂是绘画史上少有的取得独特成就的画家兼诗人，作品注重装饰主义。他以女性为题材，作品弥漫着忧郁而伤感气氛，他不着力细节的描绘，但却注重表现女性的颈项美，罗塞蒂笔下的女性都有修长圆蕴的脖颈，使人过目不忘。

在罗赛蒂的画中，多半以妹妹克里斯季娜、爱妻艾勒阿罗尔为模特，妹妹Christina Rossetti 也是优秀的诗人，在题材范围和作品质量方面均为最重要的英国的女诗人之一。她的诗歌表现出一种双重的自相矛盾的感情，一方面它们表达感官上的审美情趣，另一方面又含有神秘圣洁的宗教信仰。

你一定会很奇怪为什么铁匠是blacksmith不是iron man什么的？
💧smith的来源还蛮受争议的，一种说法是源于古英语词“smythe”，意思是to strike，击打；另一种说法是源于德语外来词"smithaz" 表示skilled worker，个人更倾向于后一种，毕竟还有其他各种smith：

💧那么铁匠为什么是blacksmith啊？是因为打铁的小哥哥们都被熏的很黑吗？

Content Analysis

今上一节卡叔举例论述了使他人感到被重视的重要性：夸奖邮务员的头发使他在厌烦工作的情绪中展开了笑容； Jane 和Rose 在餐饮摊(refreshment booth)各自被分配任务，感受到自己的价值从而化解了一场尴尬。

今天的内容中，柯恩因一封赞美信生命翻转，成为人生赢家：柯恩写了一篇赞美诗人罗赛迪的演讲稿，并把这稿寄给了诗人本人，生命由此翻转（a turning point for his life），成为罗赛迪的秘书，接触各大文豪，并开始自己的写作生涯。这就是真诚赞美的力量（such is the power of heartfelt appreciation）

之后卡叔一步举例，说明不吝真诚赞美之词的人究竟会给自己和他人带来哪些改变：

一个叫克里斯的男孩, 他安静害羞，缺乏自信( a very quiet, shy boy lacking in self-confidence)，常常因此得不到应有的关注（does not receive the attention he deserves）,一日他手工课初级班（beginning class）的导师罗兰先生看到他一丝不苟地干活（work diligently）,感受到了他内心深处的火热（I really felt there was a hidden fire deep inside him），提出让他进入高级班学习（advanced class）他强忍眼泪(hold back his tears), 无比激动。克里斯教会了罗兰每个学生都同样重要(equally important)。

另一个例子是关于作者讲习班的一个学员R先生。他和太太拜访在太太在长岛寡居的老姑妈。他和老姑妈聊起了她所住的这座古老的房子，勾起了她轻柔的回忆(tender memories)，分享当初如何和丈夫用爱建造者房子(it was built with love)。
